Not sure if I agree with the premise of this thread, that these 5 cities are all booming. None are Detroit, but other than Houston or Dallas, don't think the other three are "booming."
Austin, OKC, SF, SJ, and parts of LA/OC are faster growing and healthier at the moment.

Atlanta is still growing at 85k people a year...that's booming.
If you're talking about economy, that's a different story, but as far as population growth, all of these would be boomtowns with the 3 big ones booming a lot.

Maybe I'm missing something... but if the population is booming, and the economy isn't, how is that a good thing?

The economy is getting better, but it's not booming like Dallas and Houston are. These 2 cities are really far ahead of just about every other city in the country at the moment.
While I absoultely HATE how suburban Houston is, it does offer good diversity, food, etc. It's close to the ocean and is a little more interesting. While it has no character IMO, it has all the amentieis of big cities, it's just I hate how they are laid out.
For me Dallas, it has never appealed to me at all. The geography in the area is boring, it's similar to Houston in how it's built up, but I think Houston just has more going on. Atlanta beats Dallas for me because I feel it has more character. Phoenix which I also hate, at least has mountains and interesting location. Charlotte, is boring as heck, but very pretty, lots of trees and I actually like the state of North Carolina.
For me though, Dallas has no redeeming quality. At the very least the other cities have something more interesting. To me Dallas is just a small step above OKC.
