Hello,
I'm a 30 year old, single caucasian female - no kids, looking to make a move closer to family. Location-wise,
my two best bets seem to be either Houston or Atlanta (I want a place with lots of fun events/ plays/ concerts etc). I'm looking for an affordable city, with good job prospects (I'm a patent legal assistant--open to other types of jobs i.e. corporate). I'd like to live in a place where I can find enough like minded people to be friends with and also to date.
The only thing I didn't mention is that I tend to fall to the left politically. I'm not an outspoken liberal or anything, but I'd like to find at least a few good friends who share my leanings. Do you think this is also possible?
I've never been to Houston, but I've been to Atlanta many times and I can vouch for the city in meeting your criteria. There are plenty of concerts, clubs, bars and such in the city. I'd consider it a very lively, energetic city. The city of Atlanta is pretty progressive, but once you go in the suburbs (especially the ones to the north) you'll find some conservative strongholds. Atlanta is better for walking and you can find great apartments from downtown all the way to Buckhead. That being said, at the moment Houston is faring better economically.
Atlanta. You would love our music festivals (TomorrowWorld, CounterPoint, Music Midtown, etc), our festivals (Atlanta Arts Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival and all of the neighborhood festivals), our airport has the most direct flights than any airport in the world so that means no more layovers for you, the largest food market called Ponce City Market is opening here next year, our version of Rodeo Dr is opening next year, we have decent heavy rail transportation system. Atlanta is closer to more cities, we are a 2 hour flight away from 80% of the USA population, our topography is prettier, we have no mandatory toll roads anywhere in the city, etc.
Houston has a better museum scene, more jobs, warmer climate, a little more diversity (more asians and hispanics), closer to the beach even though Galveston Beach sucks, etc.
All in all both cities are more similar than different. I will pick Atlanta just because I live here

Sounds like Atlanta is the place for me. I love music festivals and festivals and general. I also like a city with more energy and hustle and bustle. Sounds like Atlanta has that more than Houston.
