I read that Houston's Texas Medical Center was the largest medical district in the country. I am not sure if this based on square miles or employment numbers. Does anyone have a list or link to the largest medical districts in America?

I am curious as well! I know the big one in Aurora, Colorado is rapidly rising up the list and may already be top 10!

I think it's mostly based on the number of institutions.

One square mile in Cleveland has a few heavy hitter medical campuses:

PICTURE OF CLEVELAND CLINIC: http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/...e051909_57.jpg

Complete list:
In whatever category you use, this area has to have some weight. Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals are Cleveland's #1 and #2 largest private employers.

The BRT public transportation line bisecting the area is called the HealthLine

Not sure how big other places' medical centers are (other than Houston) but Philadelphia has a very large medical district, as seen in the foreground of this picture found here ( Hup And Chop Hospitals And Philadelphia Skyline Photograph by Duncan Pearson - Hup And Chop Hospitals And Philadelphia Skyline Fine Art Prints and Posters for Sale ). It is composed of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and The Childrens' Hospital of Pennsylvania, both of which are nationally ranked very high (CHOP is #3 children hospital). It also has many medical research buildings surrounding it and it makes a huge medical district. UPenn's medical school is usually one of the top 3 recipients of grants from the NIH. Pittsburgh has a huge medical center/district too.

I had no idea Texas Medical Center was so large. Oakland (my 'hood in Pittsburgh), has a very large medical district. Not 160,000 employees though. I think its in the neighborhood of 55,000 to 60,000.

The Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans (long, I know) is going to be roughly 2 million sq ft I think.

We are talking about districts I think, not individual hospitals.
