Illinois is a fascinating state because it is so single metro dominant. Peoria has the biggest downtown of any city outside of Chicago, but its economy is crumbling. Springfield is the center of state politics and Illinois' many government offices. Champaign is probably the most important right now. Naperville has the most money. Joliet is the fastest growing. Rockford might very well become a standout here in the next 10-20 years with the rapid rate of suburbanization along the I-90 corridor between O'Hare and Rockford in addition to the strong possibility the Rockford airport becomes the region's third (fourth if you include Milwaukee) major airport.

Just to clarify, I put the city I first think of in brackets next to the second city I thought of. Texas, California, and Florida were very difficult for me as it seemed like a whole bunch of names popped into mind after thinking of the state.
Texas: Dallas [Where I Live]

New York: Buffalo [New York City]

California: Los Angeles [San Francisco]

Florida: Miami [Tallahassee]

Georgia: Savannah [Atlanta]

Ohio: Columbus [Cleveland]

Illinois: Cairo [Chicago]

Wisconsin: Madison [Milwaukee]

Michigan: Flint [Detroit]

Virginia: Arlington [Richmond]

North Carolina: Raleigh [Charlotte]

South Carolina: Columbia [Charleston]

Tennessee: Memphis [Nashville]

Missouri: Kansas City [Saint Louis]

Kansas: Wichita [Kansas City]

Arkansas: Texarkana [Little Rock]

Alabama Birmingham [Mobile]

Arizona: Tempe

Mississippi: Jackson [Gulfport]

Colorado: Boulder [Denver]

Louisiana: New Orleans [Shreveport]

Massachusetts: Springfield [Boston]

New Jersey: Newark [Trenton]

Hawaii: Wailuku [Honolulu]
