Tulane (in the city), Nicholls State (hour away), Southern U (hour away), U of L (2ish hours away), Southeastern Louisiana (metro), and UNO (city) are all Division 1. Let's not act like 1 extra school in the metro is that much of a difference. Our teams might be better too. UL meets Tulane in the New Orleans bowl.
If you're going to include NCAA schools two hours away from New Orleans then you should provide the same courtesy for Nashville: Western Kentucky, Austin Peay State, Tennessee Tech, Murray State, UT-Martin, and even UT-Chattanooga.
Since this conversation is about sports, you can't discount that Nashville has two FBS schools within its metro (Vanderbilt and MTSU) while New Orleans has just one. For basketball, the New Orleans MSA has three NCAA Division 1 schools: Tulane, UNO, and Southeastern Louisiana. The Nashville MSA has five: Vanderbilt, Belmont, Lipscomb, and TSU (all in Nashville) and MTSU in Murfreesboro.
Thus, not only are there clearly more NCAA sports in the city of Nashville than there are in the city of New Orleans, the same can be said of the Nashville MSA over the New Orleans MSA. New Orleans obviously hosts more big-name games than Nashville (hello Sugar Bowl) but during an average week there are more collegiate sports events in Nashville than there are in New Orleans.

The U.S. Census shows Nashville's 2012 MSA population at 1,726,693, a 3.3 percent increase from 2010, and the New Orleans 2012 MSA population at 1,227,096, a 3.1 percent increase from 2010.

Touche.
I only mentioned UL because of how popular the team has become and the tailgating experience there.

I say that because of the rebuilding and vast progress taking place here currently. New Orleans is evolving into its potential.
I agree with that, but wouldn't you say Nashville has been fulfilling its potential longer than New Orleans has and thus should take that category?
