Actually, technically The Strip is in an unincorporated part of Clark County(called Paradise and Winchester) and not in the City of Las Vegas itself. As well the airport and UNLV are in unincorporated Paradise as well. Probably a lot of people who visit Las Vegas never really set foot in the actual city of Las Vegas--unless one goes downtown and to Fremont Street.

Totally disagree. It's the most urban U.S. city south of Washington DC and east of California.

New Orleans is very walkable, with narrow streets and a pedestrian-friendly fabric. It's one of the urban gems of the U.S.

Let's make sure we all understand that tourists just don't visit Orlando for Orlando like they visit NYC for NYC
Tourism is tourism. It's not fair to slice and dice, "WHY" tourist go to certain cities. That's just being petty. Let Orlando get credit for what it does best. And that's tourism.

Ok. That's not very urban at all in my book. Certainly when you compare it to the big boys in the country.

Come on though. The reason to visit places like Miami and Las Vegas are so radically different from the reasons you'd have to visit Chicago, Montreal, San Francisco. It's really on the individuals personal preference, although thanks to advertisement and lifestyle highlights, most people do prefer to visit Miami of the lot.

New Orleans seems to have a great blend of both groups, honestly.

That being said, I'll go with Miami, pretty easily at that.
If you mean, nightlife/history combo, then you're correct. But Miami still has the natural beauty factor over NO. And Montreal has all those hills nearby(or maybe right in the middle of the city if I'm correct). With Miami, it's the combo of nightlife, scenery, and exotic(compared to most of the US) Latin/West-Indian culture of the city.

Well, yeah. I'm not going to compare it to the big Northeastern cities, or even to Chicago or San Francisco. We're talking about a metro area closer in size to Grand Rapids than to the largest U.S. cities.

I still think it's pretty urban pound-for-pound, though.

What? There are 50 metro areas in this country offering good nightlife and good restaurants? Whatever, maybe I have too high of standards. I can think of about 10 having one, only about 5 making the cut for both.

Exactly, great post. I have had ups and downs with Orlando. I use to love it as a child, developed a inner hatred for the place a couple years back and am now back at loving it again. I'm in my early 30's and realize once I have children Disney will be a huge part of my life, great family vacations.

No, New Orleans does not offer much of anything. The facts prove this because NOLA doesn't rank in the top 10 for American or overseas visitors.

I agree with yyuusr, NOLA is not urban either with their low density, horrible transit and is only a one million metro area in America. A one million metro area in America is extremely small and I have not even started mentioning the tackiness, ugly women, crime and the location is a swamp. I wouldn't leave my SF bachelor pad for a 3 day trip to NOLA if it was free. I would just relax by going to the gym, catching up on sleep and my movie rental queue before visiting that city.

Ridiculous.

I would say the only cities which clearly offer more are-

NYC
LA
SF
Chicago
Boston
Philly
DC

And among those, only NYC, LA and SF offer more stuff and offer a totally unique experience like in New Orleans.

I'm not saying Miami CAN'T live off Miami Beach's appeal. But just how the city of Orlando takes credit for Disney World (which technically, is divided by two cities: Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista), Miami takes credit for the city of Miami Beach. The city of Miami does have Calle Ocho though.

Miami proper doesn't include Miami Beach. But seriously, who the heck really cares?
