Philly was just a Alpha- city on the GaWC 2010 rankings which was the same ranking as Miami. Due to the questionable metric practiced by the GaWC, and the rankings of cities being constantly shifted around, I won't be surprised when Philadelphia is considered a Alpha- world city again on their 2014 rankings.

Can somebody please tell me what I get for having lots of consular offices in my city? Do they issue a Groupon or something?

I was curious about this, so maybe it'd interest someone else. Diplomatic missions in one city, but not the other.

Houston:
Angola
China
Egypt
Equatorial Guinea
Greece
India
Indonesia
Norway
Pakistan
Qatar
Russia
Saudi Arabia
South Korea
Turkey
Vietnam

Miami
Antigua and Barbuda
Bahamas
Barbados
Bulgaria
Dominican Republic
Haiti
Jamaica
Netherlands
Paraguay
Suriname
Trinidad and Tobago
Uruguay

I'm a bit surprised that Miami doesn't have a Russian consulate. I'm also surprised it has ones for the Netherlands and Bulgaria.

What do you think LA was in 1900? There wasn't much there either. And it's growth is far more impressive. 18 million to 6.

LA's rise beats Miami, easily. Where does LA Metro population rank in the world? Top 10? That's insane. Not to mention, LA's in a isolated part of the United States. And it somehow grew into one of the most important cities in the world.

Please.

Well, it has a de facto consulate at Apogee Condominium in South Beach. I hear that Russians own most of the multi-million dollar condos.

My two cities are well represented this year. Miami seems to be the hot topic on this thread and Raleigh makes a huge jump. Then again, Raleigh always seems to do well when measured with objective criteria.

Wow, congrats to Miami. Philly has always been one of our nations largest cities. Philly's the real deal. So this is an amazing feat for Miami.

I really don't see a comparison here. Philly is not a "global" city like Miami is. It basically stands in the shadows of NYC and similar to Boston.
They are "regional powerhouses".
