I think Philadelphia and Boston do too. Although I remember one "NIGHTLINE" show in the 90s when Ted Koppel interviewed the 3 mayors of NY, Boston, and Philadelpia during a major nor easter. Mayor Guilani was actually suprised when he heard that the Boston and Philadelphia mass transit systems both shut down every night!

Well then you would still mention Boston and Philadelphia. The Philadelphia system (SEPTA) serves not only Pennsylvania but parts of New Jersey and Delaware as well. It includes trackage from the old Pennsylvania and Reading Railroads, two of the historically larger and wealthy commuter railroads. Both are mentioned in the Monopoly game!

The Los Angeles Metro/ Greater Southern California commuter rail METROLINK serves workers that mainly work in downtown Los Angeles or near rail lines/stations. It is a niche form of transportation here, not the dominant form, but it works for some people. It has the 7th highest passenger ridership of a commuter rail line in the USA.

However Metrolink is also one of the most violent commuter rail lines in the country. We have had several horrific accidents involving cars on the tracks and last year's horrendous crash between a Metrolink train and a freight train head on killing 25 and injuring 135. The story of one woung woman who moved to the L.A. area from Zambia showed the struggle some of those 135 injured still go through was actually on the cover of the L.A. Times today. Chatsworth train crash survivor has a long road back - Los Angeles Times

Lots of improvements need to be made to make Metrolink safer, especially considering it shares rail with freight trains.

SEPTA,MBTA, and Metra cover their respected areas pretty well.

Metro North, LIRR, and NJ transit are the top players when it comes to commuter railroads.

I know for a fact Boston's Commuter Rail system is great, as I ride it to and from work everyday

You can see the stats here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s_by_ridership

The tiers of Daily Ridership go as follows:

Tier 1: New York City: 916,000

Tier 2: Chicago: 324,300

Tier 3: Boston: 148,600 ; Philadelphia: 128,000

Tier 4: Washington DC: 46,200; LA: 43,600; SF: 39,100

....

Everyone else.
