To the OP, what part of L.A.? And what part of New York? Both are huge cities that have various different flavored neighborhoods.

L.A. is what you make it. You can settle in the heart of the city, or you can choose a more suburban lifestyle. It all depends on what you want.

And as for L.A. being youth-oriented, so what? I'm 50, and I have no intention of leaving. Why would I care what 20-somethings think of me, anyway? My job doesn't depend on looking young, thankfully, and that's the only reason I would consider any kind of surgery.

I'd probably choose L.A. for the weather alone, but of course, I've lived here all of my life and I'm biased.

WRONG! VERY WRONG!

Same thing applies to women.
Once you reach a certain age, you are passed over for the hot young thing that just strolled by.

Bob.

I don't think LA worships the youth and beauty. The entertainment industry does, but that doesn't represent all of LA.

I really don't see how LA is much different than anywhere else. Things like beauty pageants are prevalent all over the country.
Plastic surgery is big here partially due to the industry, but people from other parts of the world will travel here for surgery.

Yes. Aside from the entertainment industry LA is just like anywhere else.

I don't believe the fact that you're gay is really of any consequence in this situation. Both cities have thriving gay communities if you wish to be involved in them.
That being said, my two cents is: The weather in NYC is truly horrible. From horrendously cold winters to brutally hot and muggy summers. As far as dining and entertainment I personally prefer the offerings of LA.
If it's possible, try and visit both cities for at least two weeks during either winter or summer (to experience the "extremes") and that should help you decide.

New York is a superior more sophisticated city.

As you can see from the posts thus far, the information you've provided is not enough to get helpful answers. What does "quality of life" mean to you? What is included in "etc."?

If I were deciding between the two, I would consider climate, geography, and proximity to family. Someone else might care about concerts, art museums, and shopping.

Share more about yourself, and people will tell you more about how you will fit in. You might also try the "City vs. City" forum: //www.city-data.com/forum/city-vs-city/.

Sixth, and more to the point - I've been trying to tell you all along my comment directed towards you was facetious. We expressed the same thing, in very different ways.

Have a good weekend.
