Okay, it wouldn't be my last move EVER, but it'll be my last major move.

I've done the research. I've been to all three but only as a visitor, and I don't have the financial or time resources to do a long visit before I move. (About a week is the limit.) I have my pro vs. con lists. I know what I do and don't want. What I need is advice. Does anyone have any?

Here are the things that concern me:

* Is it possible to get a decent job in any of these areas with a two-year degree, industry certification and an impressive resume...but without a bachelor's degree? I have managed it in Raleigh and Atlanta. My definition of "decent job" doesn't have specific dollar figures but rather involves purchasing power -- but the $40-$50K range has done me fine in Raleigh and Atlanta. I'm an employee benefits specialist.

* Is it expensive to fly out of Tallahassee and Mobile? They're both some distance from my family so I'd have to fly in order to visit them. I'm willing to drive a couple of hours to get to the airport (i.e., Mobile to Pensacola). I go home once or twice a year.

* How friendly are these cities for singles who are not necessarily looking not to be single? How about white females who tend to seem awfully conservative until you get to know them a bit better?

* How walkable are these cities outside of the expensive-to-live-in urban cores? Is there a sense of community? Do the welcome newcomers?

* What is the literary and artist community like in these places? Is it welcoming to all types or just to the avante-garde, haute couture folks?

* If you know one, two or all three of these cities, which one would you recommend for a fortyish single and why?

Just from what I know about these cities, it seems that Norfolk might suit you best. It has a major airport and while I don't know how the local economy is doing, it's larger and has more opportunity than Mobile or Tallahassee. And because of the large military presence, it seems that it would be a little more welcoming to outsiders. I don't think any of these cities really cater to the avante-garde types to a large degree.
