Yeah, but now you don't have to use United Airlines (not that there's anything wrong with using it though).

Don't get me wrong, I'm a member for both American Airlines and United Airlines and severely need both to get around within the United States (especially for work). I'm mostly satisfied with both American and United, not the best in the world but could be worse (much worse) and they usually have great presidential lounges/guest lounges at their hub airport cities which I love using. For overseas destinations that are hours longer, best to ditch the American birds for the more qualitative foreign ones. Even better when you have a quality service airliner available to you in your metropolitan area (such as Qantas) for such voyages.

Options, you'd rather have them than not.

OW partner AA gave them a sweet incentive package for starting up service at DFW. QF didn't have the airframes to serve both DFW and SFO so they dropped SFO. When QF gets more available planes (787) I'm sure they will add SFO in the future.

QF is adding SYD-SFO flights. They start in December and by early 2016, will be run 6 times a week using 747-400 equipment. There was a press conference at IATA today with Qantas and American Airlines. American is starting daily LAX-SYD flights using the 77W beginning in December.

The move to DFW made since for QF as DFW would allow them to connect one stop to a lot more cities than what LAX would offer. The bulk of the traffic on the DFW-SYD route is connecting onward from DFW.

Yea, I would think that's a key difference between DFW and SFO. SFO is less of a connecting single-airline hub airport like Hartsfield and DFW and more of an origination/destination (O&D) airport, and is able to sustain its international (one of the top international hubs in the US...far larger than DFW) and domestic traffic by its own population/business/tourism/global appeal. It's one of the few airports in the country (along with JFK, Miami, Ohare, and LAX) where you can see dozens of liveries in a moment's time as many of the world airlines operate routes (some of them the longest in the world) out of SFO. DFW-SYD is supposedly the longest route, but as others have said, it's not because Dallas is a much larger destination for Australians than San Francisco is; it was due to codeshare and limitations.

SFO's 10th busiest international route has more annual passengers than DFW's 4th busiest international route. 5 of the top 11 international routes at DFW are to Mexico (including #2 and #3), 3 of those to resort destinations (Cancun, Cabo, Puerta Vallarta).

Not knocking on Dallas, per se, but one can look at SFO's airport operations as a bellwether for influence of the region, both domestically and globally. ~20% of passengers at SFO are international. Less than 10% at DFW are international. SFO's top 3 busiest routes, domestically, are LAX, JFK, and ORD, all 3 pulling in many many more passengers than DFW's busiest route to Los Angeles (San Francisco sends over 2 million people a year to both LA and NYC, and LA may be over 3 million people factoring in all airlines and all 3 airports and it might be the busiest overall route in the world if I read that right somewhere, Chicago is over 1.1 million).

In fact, SFO was the #1 destination airport for Newark, the #2 at JFK, the #1 at LAX, and the #3 at Chicago (where Dallas came close at #4). So looking at plane passenger traffic, there is the most connectivity between New York, Chicago, SF, and Los Angeles. That's a pretty solid statement.

DFW + Love Field moved about 69 million people, predominantly through American Airlines.

SFO + Oakland + SJ moved about 66 million people, over 10 million of that international (nearly 2x that of DFW), without being much of a hub (secondary hub for United, hub for tiny airline Virgin, focus for Southwest).

I digress, there is impressive connectivity with both regions, but slightly different drivers. DFW has many advantages over SFO, and the reverse is true, too. But one can deduce things from simply looking at airport traffic, especially if one considers international traffic to be important, as well as connectivity to the undisputed #1 and #2 cities, and other undisputed Top 5 cities (ahem Chicago).
