I was hoping some of the more respectable posters knowledgeable of both areas would show up to assist you but instead it was unfortunately hijacked early and often by despicable, hateful & ignorant personalities - jessemh431 for example. Personal opinion is one thing, but what was displayed here negatively goes beyond that. Good luck.
Basically.

Sf, while beautiful, is probably the most over hyped city in the world. With the most obnoxious, aloof, provincial, entitled, narcissistic population I have ever seen.

People are ****ed up in the head there.

There is a reason most of the natives have left, and most transplants leave after a few years.

It is a tourism town that lives on hype. So you need a new generation of suckers, every few years.

I have to agree. I liked visiting but could never live there

Getting back to the the OP's question, would you be making the same amount of money in both cities? What type of neighborhood are you looking for? Is having a car important, or would you prefer to go car free? Are you ok with cold weather? Etc, etc.

Yes. I wish I could give you unlimited positive feedback for that!

What I was saying before is that if you're some elitist know-it-all with a hugely inflated ego that somehow covers your low self esteem, SF is the place for you. If you're down to earth and enjoy just living your life, Chicago is the place for you. People are real and genuine. SF is so transient it's hard to make real friends, especially if you're not elitist and don't perpetuate the perfectness of SF. For example, University of San Francisco's slogan is "University of the Best City Ever." That sounds quite arrogant to me, especially coming from a city of under 1 million people. The natives all leave SF because of the new generation moving in right now. And of the new generation of San Franciscans moving in, not many are staying unless they are the type that South Park depicted in their "smug" episode.

Back closer to the topic, if you're income is going to be the same and you can handle the snowy winter, Chicago is WAY better than SF. You have usable beach access in the summer, better public transportation, a bigger city and therefore more options of where to live/play/hang out, more attractive locals, and friendlier people where it's easier to make a lasting connections.

And as we said before, this is all opinions. So go ahead and attack for my opinions if you want, but they're my opinion. Just like you have your opinions that SF is the center of the universe (even though billions would disagree with you), other people prefer other places. Shocker, right!

I love living in Chicago. I enjoy visiting San Francisco, but I could not live there full time. It comes down to personal preference. Give both cities a fair chance and visit both (not just touristy areas, remember the neighborhoods). This thread sure has become unhelpful.

OP..what are the top 5 things you are looking for in a city and living environment? What is important to you? What are you interested in?

"The most over hyped city in the world" it is not. I think bigger cities like New York and Los Angeles could vie for that. Also, I'd love to see what statistic you have for newcomers leaving "after a few years". Please, tell me. Because I'm pretty sure they don't pay 6k a month on rent just to get a taste of city living before moving back to Mobile, Alabama, or someplace back East- if that's what you're insinuating. People move here for jobs and to live their lives. They move out mostly because of money- besides, if both natives and transplants are leaving because of the people here, then who, of all of them, are the narcissists? There are more factors at play here than what you're essentially saying, that "the people here suck".
