IMO hurricanes (and water related events) are more of a threat than earthquakes, in the US.

I can agree with this, but one you can prepare for and the other is unexpected. When a large magnitude quake hits along with after shocks you're pretty much caught 100% off guard, and that is what makes quakes the scariest natural disasters IMHO.
