I would argue SF is more like NY than LA is ... and Philadelphia is nothing like Bakersfield.
There really isn't a West Coast version of Philadelphia hence the reason why it is very hard to compare it to West Coast cities. I do agree that comparing Bakersfield to Philly is a complete joke. Those two cities have nothing in common.
I'm an Angeleno, but my dad is from Brooklyn, so I've been to New York, specifically New York City. Seriously, I don't understand where people get the notion that these two cities are alike. The only major similarity I can think of is both cities have lots of residents.
San Francisco's Municipal Railway, or Muni, bought a fleet of our trolleys at the bargain basement price of $12,000 each, and had them completely rebuilt at a cost of about $460,000 apiece. Keep in mind that new streetcars cost in the neighborhood of $1.5 to $2 million each.
