Norfolk/Virginia Beach=San Diego
Charleston=Portland
Philadelphia=Bakersfield

I would argue SF is more like NY than LA is ... and Philadelphia is nothing like Bakersfield.

The only match I would even consider making is San Diego and Miami and even that has its stark contrasts.

You cant really matchup 20th century cities with 18th and 19th century cities.

The difference between California and Florida is that people come to California for jobs and schools while people come to Florida for weather and low cost of living. California is more similar to New England and the Mid-Atlantic than California is to Florida. California, New England and the Mid-Atlantic has lots of big cities, while Florida has mid-sized cities. Both California and New England/Mid Atlantic are union states. Florida is a right to work state. California and New England/Mid Atlantic are liberal states. Florida is a conservative state.

New England has only one big city in Boston. The rest, like Hartford, Bridgeport, Springfield, Worcester, etc. are medium sized at best. I can think of several cities in Florida (Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami just to name a few) that dwarf just about every New England city. I don't think comparing California to New England is reasonable, not even in the "kinda sorta" category. Not to mention the cultures are night and day.
