I've lived in NYC for nearly a decade now but couldn't tell you a thing about Bridgeport other than that it was maybe on a most dangerous cities list recently.
I always thought Grand Rapids had some notoriety as being the "2nd" city in Michigan (10th most populous state) behind Detroit.

I don't find it that surprising. It's close enough that folks in Chicago tend to be familiar with it, but the further away from the Midwest you get, the less aware people tend to be about GR. Especially if they are on the west coast. The vast majority of the public hear the name and state its in and just assume it must be another Cedar Rapids, or Akron, or as IvoryLeeSpurlock often mentions, Fort Wayne. When I lived there I met so many people who were surprised how big it actually was. GR is one of the later arrivals to this peer group(within the last 20 years) and most people aren't curious enough to research metro's in this population range.
