Btw New York actually has more of its land area devoted to parks, about 20%, then most other US cities. I think New York is in the top 5.

The New York art scene has moved from the art scene life to the life of art institutions. It's an amazing city but its a very much more establishment city than it was from the 50s through the 90s. A lot of that energy is moving up the Hudson River Valley to small towns like Hudson, Troy and Saratoga. Even fashion is moving up the river. It is keeping its doors in the city but creating upstate.

What's so obvious about New York being overrated?

Overrated: I would put Phiily here because even though it's the second largest city on the east coast, there is nothing worth seeing in the city besides City Hall and an old bell. However, I doubt Philly is on anyone's mind so there's noway it can be overrated. My vote would have to go to Miami. It's not a bad city per say, but it's lack of walkability ruined the experience for me when visiting.
Underrated: Boston. An utterly charming city, that doesn't get enough credit. I don't think there exists a better neighborhood than Beacon Hill in the United States.

This comment right here is the EXACT reason Philadelphia is so underrated. You know absolutely nothing about Philadelphia yet you try to speak like you do. You know nothing about what there is to do. There is far more to do in Philadelphia than in Boston, Miami, Atlanta or any other city along the East Coast not named NYC and DC... and the only reason there is more to do in DC is because of all of the museums/artificial tourist attractions. Philly is a lot more organic, a lot less cut and dry and directorial when it comes to tourists. You have to get out and explore the city a little more to discover everything it has to offer. We don't put everything on a silver platter for tourists.
Philly is by far the most underrated city on the East Coast, if not the country.

Underrated: Miami. Most people just see what's on the news and assume that's what Florida is like 24/7. If I was going to live in any East Coast metro, it would be Miami. Would probably try to stay in Ft. Lauderdale.

I hated living in Miami metro except for the South Beach nightlife

Philadelphia's crime rate is much lower than Baltimore's, and is also lower than Atlanta's, Miami's and Washington DC's. The only major cities on the East Coast with lower crime rates are New York City and Boston.
Philadelphia's crime rate is also dropping drastically, and has been the lowest it's been in 60 years.
