Because even though most of us here (myself included) can agree that it's America's #1 city by a significant margin, a lot of NYC boosters still praise it to the point of absurdity. That's not to say NYC doesn't deserve lots of praise, but the type of booster I'm talking about will still overstate its strengths and (ESPECIALLY) gloss over its weaknesses.
Regarding Philly, I'd say that most NYCers who are actually familiar with the city both like and respect it.
I would love to say that Philadelphia is the most underrated Eastern city, but even this is changing. More and more people are realizing that there's more to Philadelphia than "City Hall and the Liberty Bell". People who decry Philly are missing out on arguably a top 5 downtown experience. They are missing out on world-class arts and culture in the Art Museum, Rodin Museum, Barnes Museum, Franklin Institute, Eastern State Penitentiary, the Philadelphia Zoo. Independence Mall, and the American History Museum on 3rd and Chestnut once it is done with construction. They are missing out on a spectacular food scene, with more and more quality restaurants calling Center City and surrounding environs home. They are missing out on the increasing amount of microbreweries and beer gardens, increasingly giving Philly recognition as a beer city. They are missing out on spectacular green spaces, anchored by four of our five squares (Logan, Franklin, Washington, and Rittenhouse), our ever-increasing green spaces by the Delaware River (think Spruce Street Harbor Park and Race Street Pier) and the largest landscaped urban park in the world, Fairmount Park. They are missing out on beautifully restored historic neighborhoods, such as Old City, Society Hill, and Fitler Square. They are missing the chance to walk above the Schuylkill River on our gorgeous new Schuylkill Boardwalk. They are missing the chance to see our skyline grow both vertically and stretch horizontally with all of the new development occurring here. They are missing out on our hottest new neighborhoods, such as NoLibs, Fishtown, Brewerytown, and University City. Speaking of University City, they are missing out on seeing the growth of an area formerly littered with surface parking. In September, they will miss out on the Pope paying a visit to the Ben Franklin Parkway. The next month, they will miss seeing the Dalai Lama. In 2016, they will miss when the Democratic National Convention comes to Philly, something that I am excited about as a Republican.
If you don't recognize all of the exciting, spectacular changes going on here, several world-class sources already have. The New York Times rated Philadelphia as the #3 WORLD DESTINATION to visit in 2015. We have been called the #2 most romantic city IN THE WORLD. Walnut Street has been ranked the #8 best shopping street in the United States. Speaking of shopping, we were rated as the #2 shopping city IN THE WORLD (this is actually hard for me to believe, unless we are talking about boutique shops). Philadelphia wasn't named National Geographic's Next Greatest City for nothing!
Atlanta is definitely a bit overrated--not greatly so, but it's not 'blow my socks off awesome', not for me, anyway. Charlotte is a great city in a number of respects, but is definitely becoming a little overrated....
I have NEVER been able to figure out why people are so high on Baltimore. It definitely has merit, but Baltimore is overrated...
The entire state of Florida is overrated as some dreamland. The entire state of North Carolina is overrated big time, especially to Bortherners from NY or NJ...Myrtle Beach is overrated like hell, it really ain't that great...I have never been able to see why people are generally high on Norfolk, as to debate it potentially being the top city in Virginia. No way in hell, there's Richmond and then a gap to the rest of the cities, Norfolk is definitely overrated...I think NY is just overrated by nature, but not egregiously so. Philly, too...
Providence is sooooo underrated! That is one beautiful city, I'd live there under the right circumstances. Richmond is underrated. Albany, NY punches above its weight. I think Columbia and Charleston are underrated for sure..
@Murkisderock. You are startin to get very weird. On what planet is Norfolk and Baltimore OVER Rated??? LMAO NO ONE talks about Norfolk or Hampton Roads LMAOHAHAHA it is one of the MOST UNDERATED metros in the country....that's the second time Ive seen you say that nonsense...I sense some hate...smh. Baltimore, overrated??? WHERE was this??? NO ONE has anything positive to say about B more...stop hatin yo. SMH.
