IMO, DC is one of the most underrated cities because the city has a huge perception problem that stems entirely from the federal government. Even with all the revitalization and rapid population growth, most people in the country and around the world believe that DC is a one sided government town/ swamp in which little to no people live in. The food scene and the culture in the city is getting better and more interesting by the year.
This with the exception that unfortunately DC is a very transient city compared to other comparable cities.. With that said, I very much enjoyed my time in DC and agree that it is underrated when it comes to food scene, architectural beauty, and local culture..
I just spent the week in Ballston, Arlington. The only thing in my opinion that could be underrated about DC is the architecture and design of the city. DC is the best example of the City Beautiful Movement. Outside of that, the city is rated fine in my opinion and bordering on overrated. You listen to the radio and the tag lines are stuff like "welcome to the most powerful city in the world". The food scene is good, but to me, it feels so "new". It lacks a certain authenticity that I appreciate about some places. It comes down to the prices too. I hungout a couple times in columbia heights, and like it just isn't worth $1800 for a one bedroom to me. It feels like West Philly with less hipsters and more judgemental girls. Speaking of hipsters, they don't exist in the city, well at least not true starving artist types that fill neighborhoods like Fishtown in Philly. I can pretty much bet, there aren't raves in warehouses and other weird things going on dc off the grid. It is a very on the grid place. Just my opinion.
Atlanta for sure. I had a very glamorized view of Atlanta before I lived here for a few years.
The overall feel of the city is pretty average in my opinion. The cultural diversity, low cost of living, and jobs is what seems to attract people, however.
Overrated: Boston (Boston is a nice city...but I think it's overhyped, especially from a tourist perspective).
Underrated: Philadelphia

Agreed.
Most overrated would be Boston and Las Vegas.
Most underrated would be Philadelphia or Nashville.
