Advantages for Philly: better sports city with better venues, better food, better downtown, better public transporation, and better architecture.
Advantages for Phoenix: cheaper COL, better winter weather (summers here suck), more outdoor activities, mountains, no humidity (minus the summer here where humidity levels surge).
I prefer Phoenix for weather and scenery. Otherwise, Philly wins.
You're nuts.
I'd take a cold winter any day over 9 months of scorching hot weather. At least winter is only about 3 months and then you get 9 months of nice weather. I had two friends who attended ESU and they said some days it was so hot you couldn't even go swimming. You can't go outside. All you can do is sit inside in the air conditioning. No thanks!

8-9 months a year it is better to many
and a friend in Philly told me some days in the winter it's to cold to go swimming

I do envy the low humidity of the West -- that's for sure (although the East Coast has generally had a remarkably mild summer this year).
I guess scenery is one of those more subjective things -- I can definitely appreciate the uniqueness of the desert landscape and some of the spectacular rock formations out there, but for long-term living, I'd definitely be depressed without the widespread lush greenery/foliage of the East.

Not very nice to call someone nuts for their weather preference and by the way 9 months of scorching heat is hyperbole. Three months is more accurate for Phoenix extreme heat.
Anyway I would choose Philly over Phoenix for a plethora of reasons but I can understand and respect if someone prefers Phoenix.
I've visited Phoenix a couple of times. These cities are nothing alike and don't have a lot in common. Other than maybe crime and schools(k-12), I can't see anything that Phoenix has an advantage over Philadelphia. Weather is very subjective as some people prefer very warm temperatures year-round while others prefer cities that have 4 distinct seasons. When it comes to amenities that a city can offer, Philly is on a complete different level. The Philly area in general just has much more things to do. It's hard to compare Phoenix to an area that is more populated than the entire state of Arizona. It's not a fair match up.

How rude. I think you are nuts for enjoying cold winters, but would respect your opinion. I don't think extreme heat in Phoenix summers is enjoyable. I would prefer the humid 90F weather we have out here in summer. But I will take that extreme heat anyday over 3 months of cold and snowy weather, or heck, even the brisk autumns and chilly weather than often occurs here for much of spring.
And it is not 9 months of the year that is too hot in Phoenix. Three, maybe four months, yes, but most of the year in Phoenix is pleasant. Actually, I wish Phoenix had warmer winters.
