Hi, I am currently living in downtown Chicago but thinking of relocating to DC. I started my 50s. If I can work at either George Washington (or Georgetown) university, which city would you vote for, staying in Chicago or moving to DC? I am considering...

Weather (major reason for leaving Chicago)
Housing cost -How do you compare nice highrise condo downtown Chicago vs good area condo in DC or suburb close to the university?
Which areas in DC or suburbs are nice/safe for my age?
How is the traffic if I prefer driving rather than using public transportation? Will it take long if I buy a condo in a nice suburb?
Is parking around the neighborhood of DC or NOVA as inconvenient or expensive as Chicago?
I enjoy cultural events, diversity and atmosphere of Michigan Ave in Chicago, which means I am a city person.

Thanks.

If weather is primary? I'd say not far enough south. No doubt if the thread gets active. You will get plenty promoting that there are a lot more to find in the DC Region around it, then Chicago. Because of having Philly, Baltimore and the Atlantic shore nearby and Appalachia . They will surely say outside of Chicago metro area no comparison then. I'd also say you already decided? I'd say DC I can't see winning the traffic argument. For housing it will probably be totally suburban DC in 3 states. You will also get the DC area is far less flat, therefore more variety there? Seems then it should be more about where to live advice around DC you need here, and pricing? Good Luck.

It's mostly totally suburban in the "boondocks" sense in most (not all) of the outer suburbs and exurbs of DC. S/he may want to live in the inner suburbs. I'd recommend the NoVa suburbs since they're closer to GWU. OP might end up liking Alexandria or the City of Fairfax over Arlington (Arlington is nice but there's a LOT of young people in the mid-20s to early-30's bracket, the post-collegiate crowd. OP being 50, don't know how s/he will feel about that).
