I vote for Virginia Beach, Va. I have lived in both for 10 years or more in each.
Va. Beach has a beautiful boardwalk, bike paths at the oceanfront and at Seashore State Park, and an amphitheatre for concerts. Can't forget the Chesapeake Bay for crabbing and fishing.
Charleston is nice too. Nice weather (except for summer), rivers, parks, and seafood too like Va. Beach.
I must say that I don't care about the History or Charm of Charleston, as I care more about the coast, walking on the beach, surfing , and fishing , and crabbing.

Chareston has some very attractive beaches on the outskirts. I'd rather go back there again (I've seen both), you get the charm and beautiful beaches. VA beach is too much concrete and doesn't do much for me, nor does the adjacent Tidewater/Hampton Roads metro area. Charleston has a lot more charm and memories to offer.
I have family in VA Beach and have been to Charleston plenty of times....
I would have to say Charleston, SC....The history, the food, the beaches, the scenery, the people, shopping....I could go on....Charleston just wins in my opinion.

Virginia Beach for me because there are plenty of place near by if i want some charm (Portsmouth,Norfolk,Williamsburg,Richmond ect...) and Virginia Beach has alot going for it in its near future.
