is Hawaii or the US virgin islands a bootleg california? I would love to live in cali, but the prices are a joke and a half
As others have stated Hawaii is much more expensive than California (including the real estate). Paradise does not come for free or cheap.
But you are wrong about Cali being so expensive. Warm, tropical weather all year and very affordable lifestyle down there. Even cheaper than the Twin Cities.
its really not that expensive to live in CA. Even by the beach.
Sure it will cost more than a hell hole state, and your dollars will buy a smaller house, but its not unaffordable.
What island did they live on? Only island I'm aware of that has relatively "cheap" real estate is the Big Island. Oahu, Maui, and Kaui are pretty expensive overall.
Yup. Everything in Hawaii is expensive. Everyday items are ridiculously expensive.
Worst example: Hawaiian pineapples in CA are $2-$3, but $8 in Hawaii. LOL
Sorry to add to the "burst the bubble" party, but using cheap and Hawaii in the same sentence is an abuse of grammar...and sense! Just spoke to a family who recently moved from Hawaii and they told me how expensive it was to live there. They grew up there and also mentioned something called, "Island Fever" where residents get tired of being stuck on the island away from the mainland or continental U.S. However, if Hawaii is your dream don't let me or anyone else deter you. Good luck.
You need to settle in/on Florida. Go to the Florida forum and ask where the hippies live.
Yeah, why not Florida? In terms of warm weather all year round it's probably warmer than California is. It's definitely cheaper. As far as racism... I guess it depends on where you live, much like anywhere else. But I know South Florida is pretty diverse.
I'd also encourage you to check out Florida. Seems like it may meet your requirements. In any event, it would be the closest thing to Hawaii here on the mainland.
Personally, I find Florida to be about as culturally different from Hawaii as it gets, warm weather and palm trees aside. Then again, the OP's concerns are more about just being by the beach and having year-round warmth than culture, so perhaps Florida would be the best bet. Not a lot of hippies there from what I've seen though. Maybe Key West?
