do you really think on arts and cultural activities SF is a clear leader in this comparison. scenery and food agree but many would suggest has more arts/cultural offerings and better - its actually a very strong point for Philly whereas many other aspects discussed would not be

You may be right but I wouldn't have thought so, since SF is such an artsy fartsy city and I always thought of Philly as more gritty, working class..industrial.

Certainly Philadelphia has an industrial heritage, but in addition to the fact that it has greatly transitioned into the knowledge economy, it has always had a strong cultural/arts scene supported by the great industrial wealth generated in the region. This is similar to many other post-industrial cities.

Exactly, like Carnegie's impact on Pittsburgh, among many other examples.

Aside from philanthropy, the arts flourish in working-class/blue-collar environments that are affordable, not super-wealthy or white collar enclaves. Kind of why "arts districts" always seem so ironic to me, as they're often too expensive for artists to live in.

Even if there a flourishng arts scene in Philly, I know that San Francisco is not too shabby either. It's Theatre scence is one of the most vibrant in the states. Anyway all things considered, in addition the fact that I have visted both cities, lived in the Philadephia Metropoltan area for four years on the Jersey side long ago, I'd much rather live in San Francisco if ever I could afford it.

When was the last time you explored the city of Philadelphia?

1988. Went to South Street. Wasn't bad. But I lived in the general area from 1976 to 1980.

You should consider visiting again and going around the city. A lot has changed in the past five years since I've been familiar with the city, I can only imagine how different it looks from 25+ years.
