Ok, i know this is probably one that will go tit for tat. It's clear that both cities have their advantages and disadvantages. Just try to be fair, and I'm really talking more for Houston because it often gets unfairly bashed just by its name.
I personally love both cities. Each of them has something the other doesn't and the densities of both cities are roughly the same. I can't choose, but I'm interested in how others think. So I'll list the pros to each city that I've noticed.
Pros of each city vs the other
Pros for Denver
1. Denver has the more active downtown( I.E. LODO/16th Street Mall/Pavilions) although (downtown Houston is like a downtown Denver in the making right now).
2. Denver is an overall cleaner city.
3. Denver has better summer weather.
4. Denver has better scenery and quick access to the mountains and skiing.
5. Denver has better mass transit and LRT right now. (Houston Lightrail expansion is under construction though!)
6. Denver still has its amusement park and its downtown.
7. Denver has quicker access to casinos (maybe not a pro for some people)
8. Denver has a nicer and busier airport.
9. Denver is better outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and such.
10. Denver has a bigger convention center, which probably makes for a better convention city.
11. Denver probably is a better sports city
Pros for Houston
1. Houston is more diverse and international.
2. Houston has better and more shopping (IE The Galleria)
3. Houston has multiple skylines comparable with Denver's downtown skyline.
4. Houston has quick access to the beach and water sports.
5. Houston has better restaurants, although Denver has plenty of great restaurants as well.
6. Houston has more mild winter weather.
7. Houston has a better freeway and HOV system.
8. Houston may not have an amusement park at the moment but a much larger Earthquest is underway. Plus Kemah is an added bonus.
9. Houston has quicker access to 4 other major cities (NOLA, DFW, S/A, Austin)
10. Houston has a stronger museum district and theater.
11. Houston has more trees and natural greenery.
All in all, both cities have comparable nightlife. They both are thriving cities although Houston is growing much faster right now, but Denver just hit the 600,000 mark which should increase its density numbers.
My top 4 cities: Tucson, San Diego, Seattle, & Denver
My next alternatives: Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Fort Worth, Miami, Buffalo, Boston, Washington DC, Phoenix, & San Jose
Everyone else trails those...(I like other cities- but those aren't the ones I would ever live in) ^^^ The ones above I'd live in in a heartbeat.
And yeah lol, I really voted for Denver!
wow that's probably a 1st. When i lived in Colorado and would take my friends from Chicago to visit Denver, they were hardly impressed which made me believe that Chicago was that much better.

I like a change. I've truly enjoyed every single city I have ever visited, from Indianapolis & Memphis to New York City.
I always find something to do. And I'm not very closed on my options, I keep an open mind and I normally like it all.
Chicago is a great city, it's worth seeing if you're into big cities like New York City or Washington DC.

Chicago is that much better, I actually found Denver to be rather boring and bland in the 5 years I lived there.
I like Houston more for a lot of what the OP pointed out. I like that it is not as isolated and has weather more suited to me. Denver is great though. Houston is just closer to the Florida climate and environs that I like. Denver is more progressive but Houston is taking big strides.
