Richard Florida tweeted this article from NY Magazine today and I thought it was an interesting read.
So which city in the US and Canada do you think has the clearest path to achieving a car free lifestyle? Please support your reasons if possible with projects in the pipeline or policy discussions that would support such a rapid change.
A car free lifestyle is already possible in many cities, but I like driving tho and dislike the notion that its something to be looked down upon.
I dont think it should be looked down upon either, I own a car myself. It is possible to look into which cities could achieve this, even if you do not agree with the policy.
I am not aware of a car-free city today in the whole world.
I believe this is not meant to be taken completely literally. I believe the author is advocating that the main cores of certain cities (Or at least large zones within them) be closed off from cars completely. Copenhagen is an example of a city that has done this successfully.
There are already car free streets in some N. American cities, but large car free zones to that level? I am unable to think of any off the top of my head.
Probably would have to be a small town or city where everything is within walking distance.
Think you are going to have a hard time getting all those 1%ers to take the subway. They may not drive themselves to work, but they get there in a car.
It's like that bit on 30 Rock when Jack Donaughy (Baldwin) is convinced his girlfriend (Selma Hyack) is making up a word when she talks about a Metro Card.
I agree that certain zones in NYC seem like they would be ready for this type of development. I also agree with the author that Boston would be a perfect candidate if they get their transit priorities in order and invest in the MBTA, because pedestrian wise its an excellent city.
A sleeper may be Montreal, and I think that may be the city I actually vote for. Great commitment to pedestrian only streets, strong Metro system and just a pleasure of a city to walk through in general.
1. Montreal
2. Boston
3. NYC
4. DC
Those would be the main contenders.
