I am curious about what hoods in the south would fall into this category? Being reasonably safe, reasonably affordable, reasonably well connected by public transportation (or walking/biking) to full blown urban areas of the metro...and have a touch of that urban life, without the congestion of a downtown area.

I live in Miami, and in our metro, i'd include East Little Havana (relatively safe, though maybe that's its weakest point...quite affordable especially for Miami...very well connected to downtown Miami), North Beach (relatively safe...very affordable for the beach...well connected to the urbanity of south beach, though not really downtown), Coconut Grove (the safer parts are not so affordable, the less parts are affordable...pretty well connected by rail and bus to downtown), parts of Overtown and Wynwood are starting to fit the bill as well.

For Atlanta, it would be Midtown Atlanta, Inman Park, Atlantic Station if you take the shuttle to the Arts Center MARTA Station, or even Decatur.

Midtown Atlanta and Inman Park are directly connected to MARTA which can take you through Downtown/Midtown, Decatur, Buckhead, and Perimeter along with the airport. Inman Park is also connected to the Beltline which is a trail that connects the denser, more livable Eastern neighborhoods with each other and Piedmont Park/Midtown.

'parts' of overtown being the key point...eastern portions of overtown have changed a lot over the past few years.

I'm not sure about shootings, but in the last 5 months there have been 4 murders in Overtown that i know of...but none of them have been in the section East of 95, and South of 395, which is the part of Overtown i am speaking about.

For Charlotte I would probably put South End or Plaza Midwood. South End recently got a stop on the light rail line and both neighborhoods are a 15 minute walk from downtown and they have a lot of culture but they are very affordable unlike Elizabeth and Myers Park.
