Another list of "second most populous cities" in each state, based on the last official census, and easily available online. As this thread has developed, most posters are speaking of something else: ranking, prestige, profile in the state and outside of it. By that measure, many of the above cities are decidedly off (e.g., Montgomery, Alabama -- a distant 4th after Birmingham, Mobile, and Huntsville).

After Birmingham sure, Mobile maybe but not Huntsville.
Montgomery is still the capital of Alabama and a lot more spoken about internationally than Huntsville.
Orlando is the second city of Florida. Its also the second largest population center in Florida now too. Though Florida's second city is up in the air, Tampa can make an equal argument too, I suppose.

I've noticed that too. I encouraged people to list cities that are famous, well known, or hidden gems that offer a lot that the national public at large may be unfamiliar with. Sometimes the second biggest city doesn't offer as much as the 3rd 4th or 5th. It's not always as simple as more people = better, especially in a 2nd city thread like this.

Definitely agree Birmingham is the premier city in Alabama, think Mobile easily takes number 2. Number 3 spot is tricky, Huntsville has a TON of federal money poured into it from the Space Program presence there, a lot of high tech jobs and highly educated workforce in that city. Montgomer, aside from being a decent sized city and the state capital doesn't have as much going for it. Think it might be underrated nationally, but it's hard pressed for 3rd with Huntsville, especially at the rate Huntsville is expanding.
New Jersey's primary is probably Newark with Jersey City being secondary. And if the populations are reversed, then flip them. Atlantic City isn't a real city.

How is it not a real city? People do live there, and the city offers a lot.

Well San Antonio city proper is bigger than Dallas in population and land mass. But Dallas has the biggest metro in the state thanks to Fort Worth.
Dallas is Texas' SECOND city? Really? I know Austin is "hot and trendy" right now, San Antonio is the most tourist friendly, and Houston is the biggest, but Dallas is still the first city that comes to mind for most people all over the world when they think of Texas...
