Washington is kind of funny. It's technically Spokane in terms of population, but economically, Tacoma and even Bellevue have more clout. I'd say it's Tacoma v. Bellevue. In 10 or so years, Bellevue's going to be far more developed than either Tacoma or Spokane. As it is, Bellevue is attracting many more white collar jobs.
Yes, agreed. I was wondering given the very broad definition that the OP given for the second city, how that it'd be harder to define WA Second city. Bellevue already had overtaken the #2 urban spot (which was Tacoma's for a long time) and has an extremely healthy economic hub with lots of HQs set there (while Tacoma is recovering still).
I don't really get the Olympia votes though. In that sense, would almost all the states's capitol be the second city?

Why would you put Ann Arbor over Grand Rapids it's almost half the size and close to 1/3rd the size as a metro area? Is it due to the University bringing more attention?

Yes, because of UMich (the most famous university of Michigan), it's probably the second most known city in Michigan outside of Detroit.
All of these people picking Richmond as Virginia's SECOND city! The vast majority of Virginians will tell you Richmond is one. Norfolk is probably two, although Alexandria gives it a good run for that spot....
Buffalo is only second to outsiders, far as NY is concerned. Natives and residents can argue Rochester or Albany for number two with validity...
I think the real answers are in the State forums. If we asked everyone to rank the cities in their own states there, we'd see how natives view without outside perception...
