Washington is kind of funny. It's technically Spokane in terms of population, but economically, Tacoma and even Bellevue have more clout. I'd say it's Tacoma v. Bellevue. In 10 or so years, Bellevue's going to be far more developed than either Tacoma or Spokane. As it is, Bellevue is attracting many more white collar jobs.
Yes, agreed. I was wondering given the very broad definition that the OP given for the second city, how that it'd be harder to define WA Second city. Bellevue already had overtaken the #2 urban spot (which was Tacoma's for a long time) and has an extremely healthy economic hub with lots of HQs set there (while Tacoma is recovering still).
I don't really get the Olympia votes though. In that sense, would almost all the states's capitol be the second city?

Alabama Montgomery Alaska Fairbanks Arizona Tucson Arkansas NW Ark California San Francisco Colorado Colorado Springs Connecticut A couple after Hartford tie Delaware No distinct city after Wilmington Florida Tampa Georgia Savannah Hawaii Do not know Idaho CDL Illinois Peoria Indiana Fort Wayne, As a person who drives through South Bend often Fort Wayne just feels bigger. Although I suppose with ND South Bend gets more attention. Iowa Cedar Rapids Kansas Topeka Kentucky Lexington Louisiana Baton Rouge Maine After Portland? Bangor maybe? Maryland DC Burbs do they count? Massachusetts Springfield Michigan Detroit (After Detroits Suburbs) For the purpose of this poll i'll say Grand Rapids since it's the Academic answer. Minnesota Duluth Mississippi unsure Missouri Kansas City Montana Unsure after Billings Nebraska Lincoln Nevada Reno New Hampshire Unsure New Jersey Seems like all Jersey cities have turned into suburbs for either NYC or Philly, is there truly a first city? New Mexico Los Cruces New York Buffalo North Carolina Raleigh-Durham North Dakota Grand Forks Ohio Cincinatti Oklahoma Tulsa Oregon Salem Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Rhode Island unsure if there truly is one South Carolina I dont know if Charleston or Columbia goes first, a lot of South Carolina cities seem equal I dont know if there is a first city. South Dakota Unsure Tennessee I guess it would be Memphis, since Nashville has surged passed it in the last 40 years. Still seems vague to me. Texas Dallas and Houston seem equal to me. San Antonio seems to have second city syndrome. Utah No clear winner. I guess St. George although when I was there I didn't have much of a city Identity. Vermont Is there truly a first city? Virginia Do the DC burbs count? Hampton Roads has grown bigger than Richmond, but Richmond seems to have the most Virginian Identiy. What would you choose? No Clear first city IMO. Washington Spokane since Tacoma and Others are enveloped in Metro Seattle. West Virginia Huntington? Wisconsin Madison Wyoming Which is the first city? Cheyenne because it's the seat of gov't?
For Texas, Houston seems like a second city to the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex. But if you want to call those 'equal' then Austin. San Antonio is more like a third city.
For Michigan, if you want to separate Ann Arbor from Detroit and suburbs, then it's definitely Ann Arbor. If not, then Grand Rapids I guess. Though Lansing/East Lansing has some good arguments.

For California, it's San Francisco/Bay Area.
For Florida, it's Orlando.
For Georgia, it's Savannah.
Why would you put Ann Arbor over Grand Rapids it's almost half the size and close to 1/3rd the size as a metro area? Is it due to the University bringing more attention?
As a stand alone city I could see it 3rd, possibly 4th after Lansing if you go by metro size.

Yes, because of UMich (the most famous university of Michigan), it's probably the second most known city in Michigan outside of Detroit.
All of these people picking Richmond as Virginia's SECOND city! The vast majority of Virginians will tell you Richmond is one. Norfolk is probably two, although Alexandria gives it a good run for that spot....
Buffalo is only second to outsiders, far as NY is concerned. Natives and residents can argue Rochester or Albany for number two with validity...
I think the real answers are in the State forums. If we asked everyone to rank the cities in their own states there, we'd see how natives view without outside perception...
