Philadelphia is better than Houston and Dallas. New Orleans is also better than Houston and Dallas.

I think unless you drive in from LI, Westchester, or NJ, as many people do, you'd be nutso to live in Manhattan and not use the subway to get around, as unless you're trying to get from Point A to Point B, and presumably north-south rather than cross-town, you're going to be sitting in traffic horns a blazing for a good portion of the day. Manhattan rush hour is long and relentless. It's one thing to be crawling along at 10 mph on a freeway for a good 30-45 minutes and actually get some distance in. It's another to sit and go 5-15 blocks in a walkable city in the same amount of time.

So, long story short, I think there are plenty of wealthy wealthy people who take the subway or some form of dedicated transportation. Or they plan out when they're going to be on the roads, and it's not after 7 AM or before 7-8 PM in Manhattan.

Houston is a young city and is still coming up. NYC is more established. Both cities offer the american dream.

To the op you you can't go wrong with either city. Both are nice. However Houston seems to have a lot of haters on this site.

^^^$40K is a huge difference, though. It's one thing if it were $120K vs $80K or $140K vs $100K, but we're talking $260K vs $220K. The guy has to spend $40K more on rent and food and utilities in New York than in Houston for it to truly be "more bang for your buck" in New York, and the guy probably won't have a car in New York, which can easily be a $10K-$20K expense a year in Houston. Plus, don't you think with that salary the guy would choose to live well in Houston? It's not like Houston is free. Rents for prime spots aren't "cheap" and mortgages for decent places in decent areas aren't New York expensive, but they aren't Oklahoma City cheap either.

My opinion is that $40K difference in pay is certainly enough to tip the edge to NYC if all the other stuff isn't already. Not to mention, once you attain a salary that high, you can move elsewhere with that salary more or less. $220K in Houston would be starting lower. There's something to be said for someone who has done their time in New York and eventually wants to move on to a place like Houston. They can bring their higher NYC salary and NYC job experience/resume with them.

The same reason why people are bringing up Different cities when they have nothing to do with this thread.

Nobody was "hating" on Philadelphia. Somebody said Houston doesn't have as much to offer as certain cities. I simply disagreed with the person mentioning one of those cities. Nobody put Philadelphia down in this thread. Nobody has said anything negative about Philadelphia in this thread. Hell. Nobody outside of Houston or New York even brought up Philly before somebody from Philly did.
