Atlantic City still has parts of the city that are rundown, but it’s attractive to some in an odd way. Also, the posts back four, five years ago are during a period when Atlantic City suffered a string a casino closures, most of which have come back up in recent years.

Two nice things about Atlantic City is that it does have a pretty good beach and it also has very good Vietnamese food.

That sounds similar to the “you can ski and go to the beach in the same day” boast I heard yet did a grand total of 1 time during my 33 years in CA (just like I once had a porterhouse at 2:30AM in NYC—again, once).
I’ve actually surfed and skied (or snowboarded) in the same day more times than I can remember. Granted I lived at the beach for 20+ years so it made it a lot easier than it does now living 25 minutes from the water, but I still do it a few times a year because I can. Having a cabin 10 minutes from a ski resort helps too.

As for the thread question and your previous post, I realize you’re from NY and now live in Miami, but people going to Miami for spring break, spring training, or any other planned out trip is not the same as being able to get in your car and be somewhere in 4-5 hours, sorry. Yes traffic can suck, but I’ve made that drive at all hours and it’s usually not as bad as people make it out to be. I guess if you leave right when you get off work Friday and leave Sunday afternoon it can, but wait a few hours after and it’s a straight shot.

I see why this thread went nowhere five years ago, it’s a pretty ridiculous comparison.

I hear you but it’s not uncommon for NY’ers to come down to the Miami MSA 1-4x year on vacation, own a second home here, have family here, relocate here (to work and/or live) and/or retire here...there even was an old joke, what’s a Jewish woman’s favorite wine?? (whine...and I’m Jewish so hopefully nobody gets offended—“I wanna go to Miami”.

There is a big connection, and historically has been, between NY metro and SoFla—it’s not a once every 2-5 year trip; it is more common and less of a schlep than some think in spite of the distance. I wouldn’t expect people on the West Coast to be as familiar with that as people on the East Coast. The tax reform law is accelerating this “relationship”. When I lived on the West Coast I went to Vegas 1-2x/year—planned, not spur of the moment.

Can't believe I read through half of this thread. Normally I power through the whole thing if I'm gonna read some of it, but I just couldn't take the back and forth cycle any longer.

I would pick NYC-Miami for the diversity of options/amenities/lifestyles/weather but I would certainly love LA-Vegas too. I mean, NYC and LA are two of my top 3 cities in the country, and Vegas and Miami are probably my top two part-time destinations.

As for whether they belong compared to each other or not, I find it silly to focus on that. No need to get hung up on whether NYC and Miami should be in the same region, cause it doesn't matter. The comparison was made by the OP and if you want to respond to the question then respond to it...or don't. However...the difficulty or ease of traveling between them is certainly a legitimate factor in deciding which is better so have at it in discussing why that is a factor for you. But the differences are not such that it disqualifies the OPs question. Again, I would pick NYC-MIA slightly, and that's considering the travel time and planning requirement.

If we're comparing the two combined cities NYC+Miami versus LA and Vegas it's New York+Miami and it's not particularly close. Vegas is great as a weekend getaway, not much else, wouldn't consider it a fabulous place to live. Miami is on another level as as a desirable place to live long term if you've got a lot of money. New York vs LA is more about preference of the type of city and region you like.

Definitely NYC+Miami.

The funny thing is I like LA more than NYC, and even slightly more than Miami, but Las Vegas is the one that brings that pair down.

Las Vegas while it's an experience, doesn't feel like a real city, and basically your only two options are living in sprawl or your main hub for activity/shopping/entertainment is the strip which feels like disneyworld for adults. No culture, no identity, I would even say not all that classy.

Las Vegas really drags down LA in this one. Miami complements NYC IMO.

I didn't read any of this thread at all. My first thought was:

This should be:
New York City + Atlantic City vs Los Angeles + Las Vegas
