I've been wondering this for a while. I've always thought that it's easier to make it in a smaller market like Ames, Iowa or Nebraska rather than a large market like Las Vegas, LA, Providence, etc. I feel this way because I think the competition is much tougher in thse cities(more educated people, driven people, higher costs of living, worse unemployment in a lot of cases, etc). Where is it easiest to make some money and have a good life if you didn't start out with that much and dont have that much education or experience? What do you think?

I'd put Dallas on that list. It's a decent place to earn a living - if you can handle the climate and the bland geography.

Being a smaller market doesn't necessarily mean it's less educated. Per your example, I'd venture to guess that Ames, Iowa has a more educated population than Vegas, LA, and Providence.

But anyways to answer your question, I'd guess a large but not too large metro area would be best. I'm thinking a place like Denver or Minneapolis. Doesn't have the competition or high cost of living of larger metro areas like NYC or DC, but they have most of the opportunities, opportunities which may be tough to come around in a smaller metro area like Omaha or Boise.

Omaha isnt low on opportunities.

We need workers desperately. We are getting people to move here to take them, but the labor shortage is ridiculous right now. IT, medical, construction, real estate, services and really all other sectors needs people. Managers are frustrated.

By the way, a decent percentage of Lincolnites work in Omaha. About 10%. We are a labor market of about 700,000 workers (1,300,000 total population )
