I'd hate living in either but if you held a gun to my head I'd rather live in South LA. It's more peaceful and less congested.

This would annoy the hell out of me real quick.

Obviously Harlem. I've been there and it's not bad and it's very close to Midtown and the rest of Manhattan. South LA is bad and very spread out, you would need to drive for a long time before getting somewhere half decent

I just drove through Harlem the other day on the way to the Yankees stadium. I liked what I saw quite a bit. Saw a rare Phillies victory too. Made the night sweeter.

When we get sick of loft living in DTLA and want more space, West Adams (a South LA neighborhood west of USC) is one of the top places on our radar. They have one of the nicest collection of historic craftsman homes anywhere (nearly rivaling Pasadena), and they're finally getting the restorations they deserve as the neighborhood gentrifies.
If we were ever to move back into the city, West Adams is also way up there on the list. Or perhaps Leimert Park, which has a slightly different housing stock but equally historic and attractive.

That area of South LA you described (along the Expo and Crenshaw Lines) is actually surprisingly compact - I know that until I drove down MLK Blvd that I had no idea the distance from USC to the Baldwin Hills is only about three miles.
