Philadelphia, as I mentioned, is not a Philly movie. It's a movie that happens to be set in Philly. There's nothing particularly memorable about Philadelphia in that movie.
The building containing Tom Hanks' loft apartment was located one block south of the supermarket where I shopped when I lived in Center City's Washington Square West neighborhood. But otherwise, yes, an ambulance-chasing lawyer can be found in just about any large city, although this one does have a strong connection to the legal profession.
I'd say that Philly is more of a character in the "Rocky" movies.
But the reason I'm reviving this moribund thread is because I think you could say the same thing about the TV series that's now most closely associated with the city, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Sheesh, its first three seasons weren't even shot in the city at all. And you could set a bunch of misfits who inherited the dive bar one of their fathers owned in just about any large city in the Northeast or Rust Belt and have the same hijinks ensue.
But the series' co-creator is from here - and even owns an Old City bar. Ergo, it's set here.
