People argue over population too much here and walkability its annoying. I never lived in a city that I walked a lot except when I went to college in Boston, most cities are car centric this is the USA. Even a lot of my buddies that still live in NYC and Boston drive cars when they clearly don't need them.

When people rank cities by municipal population, as if the population within the city limits determines how large a city truly is. I think the metro/urban areas are a more reliable statistic than anything else in this matter. What if I suggested El Paso ranks several tiers higher than Atlanta because the city only population of Atlanta is less than El Paso? Or that Bakersfield, CA is in the same league as New Orleans?

I just threw those out as neutral conversation starters, as they're popular talking points on this forum (besides the dog park one, obviously). I don't necessarily find them inherently infuriating. Should I do a poll, though?

That GaWC study. That one ridiculous study from an obscure British university has been (mis) used about a billion times on C-D.

People still think it's a ranking of city importance.

"Progressive". It just devolves into a debate about whether or not Dallas/Houston are conservative cities.

I dislike the use of CSAs, they seem too broad for my liking. MSA and urban area seem much better.

Red John beat me to it. the GaWC list annoys me. CSA really only works for the Bay and perhaps, maybe Boston to an extent. DC, no.

Why Boston? That seems to be one of the more egregious examples of inflation, with an MSA of 4.5 million, but a CSA of 8 million. New Englanders, correct me if I'm wrong, but is Manchester, New Hampshire really "Boston"? Providence, Rhode Island? Again, it just seems like a childish game of how big I can make my "city" and us Americans are the worst at it.
