Here's a match up between two pretty good places that don't seem to get much respect around these parts.
Some of the issues seem to be the similar (air pollution, crime level, CA laws vs the Mormon thing, etc.) and surprisingly are pretty close to the same size both in population and area (109 miles vs 97 miles).
CSA Population:
Sacramento: 2.47 million
Salt Lake: 2.42 million
Population (2 mile radius):
Sacramento: 67,013
Salt Lake: 58,470
So how do the stack up?
- Nature
- People
- Amenities/Arts
- Weather/Air Pollution
- COL & Quality of life
- Light Rail/Public Transportation
- Downtown living (K Street vs Main Street, etc.)
- Employment/better paying jobs/future outlook
Overall, I'd probably prefer SLC. It would be nice if it had Sac's diversity though
I was surprised there is any diversity by the way people talk about SLC, but I guess it's around 20% Latin. It also has the third largest Sri Lankan community in the United States (according to wikipedia) and a number of Polynesians. Sounds like an odd mix if nothing else.
Any idea on the comparison between them on the air pollution issue? Both seemed to get mentioned a fair amount for it.
Definately, Sacramento. Decent big city amenities and the government hub of a mega-state. Good ethnic and cultural diversity. Also, the city has a surprising amount of tree cover.
Sac-town's geographical location is in a sweet spot. Near the Bay Area, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe/Reno and Yosemite.
So I've been told, but is this a case of the SLC air is bad or one of SLC air is bad in relation to Sacramento's bad air?
Such as?
Sacramento..
- Arts scene
- Historic neighborhoods
- City parks (especially along the river)
- Good universities
- New Downtown NBA-grade arena (pro sports)
- Decent air connections
- Amtrak
SLC's air in the winter is god awful. Google Salt Lake City inversion for examples.
I've had asthma attacks so bad in SLC because of bad air quality that I've had to go to urgent care.
I grew up in Sacramento, and everything about it is better: the weather, culture, diversity, and the people are friendlier IMO.
If you like skiing and snowboarding in Utah, get a hotel room at a higher elevation during the inversions or you'll be in a toxic smog if you stay in SLC.
Salt Lake easily! cleaner, better transit, just a more compact city
