Just trying to see where everyone's source of city curiosity comes from.
For me -- I've always been a geography nerd (state finalist in the National Geographic Geography Bee back in 7th grade) -- and have moved around a lot as a kid and an adult.
Because growing up in a city you might think it's the best city in the world until you step out into another city. Comparing other cities to your City lets you know where your city stands. and eliminates any delusions you might have had about your home town

Well I've lived in three states, moving to a fourth one in 2016, and have traveled to 40 states. So I have a lot to share and compare based on experience. And like the OP, I consider myself a geography nerd.
Similar to everyone else, moving around alot and having to go through the plus/minus city comparison in my real life. When you are so mobile, you are going through these comparisons constantly, so it seems like a natural progression to being curious about other cities as a hobby.
Also a geography/travel enthusiast from young. Used to sit up to all hours of the night studying maps, reading through my atlas and travel books. Still like to do the same now from time to time.
Reading and posting on this site is definitely a very nerdy and many times unhealthy way to spend your time.
Found this forum arguing daily with a co-worker/friend about which of our hometowns is the best place ever. I thought the fact that he lives in my hometown would make it an auto victory but I was mistaken.
I've always wanted to do a lot of traveling and CD is one of the only places where people have an interest in cities like me. Most people just like to go places, but they don't really dig deeper into what these cities are about and I feel like CD has done that. I've learned so much on here
I'm a city geek and I love traveling and seeing new places. I have learned so much about other cites and even my city(ies) since I've joined this site.
