It's not Grant Park. GP is okay, it's location is tremendous, right on the lake. It's great for housing big festivals and of course, Lollapalloza is there every year. But if no festival is going on, it's just kind of "there". No hills, no nooks and crannies to explore. Good for a picnic, I guess.

It's also not isolated enough from the city. For example, you can be in Central Park and forget you are in New York. Grant Park isn't like that. You still hear traffic and see cars zipping by on LSD.

It's Golden Gate Park all the way. It's topography & attractions are varied as compared to Grant Park of Chicago especially & even Piedmont Park of Atlanta which at least does have woods & elevation variety which is nice.
Nevertheless, Golden Gate Park is worthy of praise & inclusion on the national stage as one of the premier U.S. city parks.

Shouldn't the equivalent park for Chicago be Lincoln Park rather than Grant Park since that's much closer in size and more like an accessible escape from the city?

I'm no where near as knowledgeable about Grant Park and Piedmont Park as I am when it comes to GGP, but it has to be GGP.. right??

Golden Gate Park and it's not remotely close. It's arguably up there with Central Park as one of the best city parks in the country.

Millennium Park is basically a addition to Grant Park.... it is Full of people ALL Spring through Autumn. Grant Park is Chicago's Front Lawn to its AWESOME DOWNTOWN. No one can dispute that... As the Front Lawn as to the PALACE. Downtown as the Palace... Buckingham Fountain as its Center and Lake Michigan it faces.

I am surprised the thread does not have a Poll? I still expect SF's Golden Gate to sin? SF generally gets the nod in many aspects. The Golden Gate view is hard to match? But so is Chicago's Skyline.

But again... It is Grant/Millennium Park..... They are together CHICAGO'S Front Lawn. But Lincoln Park just North of Downtown on the Lakeshore.... Is Larger and has the city's free zoo too, with Harbors and beaches along the Lakeshore.

CHICAGO'S Downtown and North Shore Parks.....

.Millennium Park..Grant Park at..Grant Park/Millennium..Lincoln Park
...Tourist Love....Shed Aquarium..Park is Top portion..on city's N. Shore

that was the obvious question.

however, if one asks, "what is the best front door" to any US city, Grant Park would have to be high (if not highest) on the list.

As others have said, Grant Park is a different thing entirely. It's really more of a large public square than a park in the sense of the other two. I hesitate to say it's not as good, but it's an apples-and-oranges comparison. Lincoln Park is definitely the better comparison.
