Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster on this site and I'm hoping to get some help in deciding where to relocate. I have a possible job relocation to either Nashville, TN or Durham, NC but I've never visited either place. Both seem to have similar population sizes and cost of living but I'm looking for specific criteria.
First, I prefer natural beauty, large and well-manicured park systems, bike trails, hiking opportunities, and kayaking while I don't spend very much time in bars or at the theater.
Second, I know crime can occur anywhere, but Durham's crime map resembles a war zone. Is Nashville any safer than the Raleigh-Durham metro area?
Third, while I do enjoy live music and most genres of music I'm not really a huge fan of country music. Does country really saturate Nashville or is it called "music city" because it offers a variety?
Thanks for any guidance and please tell me, if you're a resident of either area, what do you really love about living there?
I think Nashville has more natural recreation opportunities nearby, especially being located right along a river. Durham definitely has issues with crime, but there are other surrounding towns that are much better in that regard.
They're both about equal in those departments except crime. Raleigh isn't too bad but Durham has issues with crime. If I had to place money, Nashville is probably safer than Durham and more on par with Raleigh.
I'm no expert but the terrain around Nashville might be better for natural recreation opportunities. Like Winston-Salem here in NC, Nashville feels like you're almost in the mountains. I'm sure there are better hiking opportunities, in that case. The terrain around Raleigh/Durham is more flat but there are still natural recreation opportunities like Umstead Park, Falls Lake, Eno River State Park, etc. Raleigh/Durham is also obviously closer to the coast if that means anything, too.
From what I've heard, you can definitely get by in Nashville without being a total country music dork. Country music is pretty popular around Raleigh but probably to a lesser extent.
I don't think I've experienced worse traffic or drivers than I did in Nashville. Thats all I remember of that place. Also, it seems arrogant to boast/label a city, "Music City". Never understood how they could lay claim to such a title.

As another non-country listener, I never really had any issue with the music in Nashville. I do think it's saturated with country music, but it's also got plenty else that you can be more than happy.
As for your other criteria, I really can't comment. But I'd probably personally choose Nashville.

Not sure about Raleigh
Maybe it was given to them- This name also dates back to 1874, where after receiving and hearing a performance by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Queen Victoria of England is reported as saying that "These young people must surely come from a musical city."

Interesting. Thought it might be something like that.
Well, if her highness says so, then it must be true. . .
Nashville would be my pick. No hurricanes, for one.
Yeah, since hurricanes have been known to devastate Raleigh on a regular basis. Also, I hear ISIS is lurking around every corner. Better hide
