I am a 27 black male who is in a career in Front End web development.
I am from Atlanta, originally born in New Jersey. I am someone who is looking for a place that is diverse, many opportunities,COL, and a place where I can meet good people as friends. Oh and dating of course, I do date outside my race btw. I have already decided that I will move to Austin TX next year and then I would like to move to one of these 3 cities I have chosen. I also wants a place that has a good urban vibe, I do perfer a nice city living but outdoor scenery is good too. I can be both introverted and extroverted. So it's really hard for me to choose form the 3. I know money may be the biggest factor, but I am still young and I want to experience life in many places first before I settle down.
I've only experienced Chicago and I would not recommend that city for African American professionals who didn't grow up there. Especially if you are into a interracial social climate.
I have many friends who I went to school with who live in Seattle and all of them are dating or have married outside of their race. I've visited the city and seems like a good place.
My job was going to make me move to San Francisco and everyone kept pointing me to the Oakland and Berkeley areas.
I dont have a clear cut answer because of limited experience but I think I would choose Seattle.
Seattle: White alone (67%), Asian alone (13.3%), Black alone (6.9%), Hispanic (6.4%), Two or more races (5.4%).
While Seattle might be "more white", it is also more tolerant and less segregated than many eastern cities, for instance. Inter-racial dating is very common and very few think anything about it. Your income and credit rating will determine where you can live, not your race.
By comparison:
San Francisco: White alone (41.4%), Asian alone (33.3%), Hispanic (15.3%), Black alone (5.5%), Two or more races (3.4%). Note: Seattle has higher black and mixed race populations.
Chicago: White alone (32%), Black alone (31.4%), Hispanic (28.8%), Asian alone (6%), Two or more races (1.5%). Note: Seattle has higher Asian and mixed race populations.
I unenthusiastically recommend Seattle. I will strongly agree that black professionals should generally avoid Chicago. I grew up in Louisiana, but I'll still say that Chicago is the most racially stratified place I've ever lived or visited. The mental and physical separation between blacks and everybody else was disturbing.
So I heard from a friend that Seattle is passive racists and it's so hard to make friends, especially if your black. Anyone has experience that?
