i don't associate those specific retailers as relevant to having a good downtown. You see that stuff in suburban malls, no big deal. I think more about aesthetics, landscaping, parks, mix of old buildings and new, arenas, stadiums, entertainment options, unique / touristy stuff, along with restaurants and bars.

Here is an example of what I think is a good downtown because of a unique feature right on Main Street.

Well the subject here isn't a good downtown; it is the most elegant and classy downtowns based on explicitly stated criteria given in the original post. Big difference.

WOW what a cool looking place, looks really pretty. Although I wouldn't call that a downtown looks more like a town center.

Thats because most downtowns have nothing close. Its extremely rare for a urban core to have all that.

Yawns. Only the 4-5 most exclusive suburban malls in the United States have this level of high end department stores.

This little place is not worthy of this discussion.

Also, so your unable to find street scenes in the 20 largest cities to substantiate your claim that the vid I posted is normal in any urban area?

i only looked at title of thread and not the original post, i didn't realize that criteria for elegant classy downtown was Macys and other clothing stores like that. i'm not a shopper .

I'm not sure what you mean by town center but that is the downtown of Greenville, the largest MSA and CSA in South Carolina.

The videos don't include the restaurants/bars and hotels, offices along the Main Street.

Well you were so dismissive about my vid but none of your reasons were very accurate.

In fact, very few downtowns are that busy and even fewer have that level of upscale amenities.

This isnt the video I responded to, so whats your point?

And even still, this vid does NOT display a downtown that is on par with Union Square.

It looks more like a clean version of the Tenderloin.

Congrats?

you said 'call me when you are this level' when you posted the video.

I think it looked like typical big city urban area and your comment didn't make sense to me. It didn't seem any busier than Charlotte or Atlanta and various other large cities. You are obviously focused on certain retailers when you made your point and I didn't realize that.

to me, a Macy's and Nordstrom and the like isn't an 'upscale amenity'. They are just clothing stores.
