In SF and in the Bay area yes. They are legends in their own minds. Sure, SF and the bay area are probably better than where most of you are from and where you probably live.

But people here are delusional and weird. They are always having to tell themselves and each other how great they are at everything and how much better they are and what not. It's like they are always reassuring themselves instead of confronting their massive Jan Brady inferiority complex.

SF is a place where people claim THEY invented IRISH COFFEE. A city where people claim to be a west coast version of Manhattan. A city where they claim the Giants are the modern day Yankees (despite never winning 2 titles in a row). A city that claims a team (from Oakland) is the modern day 90's Bulls.

It's not a bad place but the people are beyond delusional, and majority the of the population are transplants from out of state. Really it is in the same league as North Side Chicago or Central LA. But in terms of whole cities it is not on LA/Chicago's level. There are probably a few cities that are close (Houston, Philly, and such), but SF is not one of them.

I like the Bay Area, but no.

It's definitely top 5 though.

Washington, not in the discussion. Regardless of the fact its the capital.

I think LA is #2, and then its between San Francisco and Chicago for 3rd.

San Francisco certainly deserves to be in the discussion, but it's still got a ways to go before it reaches the prominence of Los Angeles and a little ways to go before it reaches Chicago-level. The downtown area of SF is better than downtown LA, though it doesn't compare with Chicago. As for the 'prominence', I would say that each of these cities has some global significance. SF is no slouch in the tech sector and they continue to produce up and coming startups at a crazy level. Los Angeles is just so big and spread out that it contains so much in it and Chicago is massive as well.

SF Bay Area over the last several years if not longer has made an arguable case for 2nd along with LA and DC, but the distance between 1st and 2nd is very large, massive actually, compared ro the distance between 2nd and the next half dozen or more US metros.

Everywhere the past 5 or 6 years, SF has come up. People talk about it more regarding everything. It seems like it dominates the popular culture and has an increasing global presence from what it had already. With NYC seeming like yesterday's new, LA out economically and Chicago suffering from violence bad press and finance problems has San Francisco becoming the number two city in america?
What world do you live in?

SF has certainly come up but it's mostly tech and tech finance related that put it and the Bay Area on the map. Other than that it's not that culturally relevant. It's just the new city on the block. SF always had a presence but in the last ten years is when it finally became world class. Lately I've been hearing more international people talking about SF than LA.
But I agree with a poster above, people in SF especially working in the tech fields think they're just changing the world or something. We get some of this attitude in Silicon beach in Santa Monica where the young creatives have flooded to in order to avoid the SF costs. I couidnt even imagine living in a city full of these types. They really think their industry is so important it's akin to the creation of the automobile. Most of them aren't bill Gates either they're just rehashing stuff or creating clever marketing gimmicks.
Chicago is a financial powerhouse second only to Wall St and has a much more developed world class city. Los Angeles is an economic giant, it's cultural cache is second only to NYC. It has bourgeoning tech economy and is experiencing a mini Renaissance in the arts.
