I figured this would be a more interesting question than the thread involving Richmond since both cities are about equi-distant from DC/Baltimore.

The Triangle is four hours from DC; Pittsburgh is four hours from both DC and Baltimore and 5 hours from Philly. So at this moment, based on proximity, I'd probably say Pittsburgh although the Triangle is significantly closer to I-95 and BosWash is slowly creeping southward.

Interesting. Thanks for posing this inquiry!

I live in Pittsburgh, but I'm going to abstain from voting since I'm honestly just not that familiar enough with Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Cary to make an informed decision.

I do know that just since I've moved to Pittsburgh in 2010 (from the BosWash Corridor) I've noticed many more transplants from the Corridor moving here seeking urbanity coupled with affordability. UBER, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Facebook (Oculus Program), Apple, and Disney all have offices here, and some of them (especially the first two) are in the process of doubling their local workforce. Whether the majority of these firms' new talent will come from Carnegie Mellon University OR from recruiting talent away from places like the BosWash Corridor in the coming years is uncertain.

I've also heard that the Research Triangle is a hotbed for Northern transplants. I believe both Raleigh and Pittsburgh have comparable numbers of adults possessing at least a Bachelor's Degree (~40%). I'd have to hazard a guess to say the "pace" is quicker here in Pittsburgh---lots of aggressive driving and people rushing down sidewalks.

Is that true about the adults with at least a Bachelor's Degree?: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2...reas.html?_r=0

Raleigh: 47.6%

^ Ok. So that's still a ~10% gap. I thought it was narrower than this. My apologies.

No biggie. I just didn't know if it was for the metro or city and if it was that high. That is still high for the city of Pittsburgh and is above the national percentage by about 8% or so.

The northeast corridor/bos-wash megalopolis is just that amtrak route and really sort of a hellish and dystopian train ride , it appears in william gibson's sprawl trilogy novels. I think the whole concept of the megalopolis and the sprawl is pretty dismal to think about

I'd say the Research Triangle based on proximity to the I95, and migration patterns.
