in honor of SXSW festival beginning in Austin, lets decide upon these two similar cities. both beautiful, friendly, hip, live music, and stuff going on all the time whether its downtown or in the hills. Austin is bigger and warmer, while Portland is near the coast. also let's just take cost of living out of the equation for now.
as a single male I would say Portland, I think it has the most strip bars in the country, lol, but economy wise, hard to beat the tech and job scene in Austin and all the great clubs along 6th street and west 6th.
Austin by far. I lived in Seattle for many years and spent a lot of time in Portland (SO is from there). I now live in Austin. I prefer Austin sooo much more.
Portland doesn't have a nightlife hub quite like 6th Ave, but it has way more bars spread across the city than Austin does. For that reason, I prefer Portland's bar scene.
This is a tough one, comparing two of the greatest cities on the planet. I went with Portland because I prefer the climate of the PNW over Texas, but Austin is very close behind it.
I don't know about more fun, but Austin is probably a bit easier to live in from a social standpoint. A lot of what it comes down to is weather and personal preference.
But I will say my friend who lived in Portland and then moved to Austin is looking to get out as she said that for all the good things Austin has going for it the traffic nightmare makes it much less enjoyable.
It's funny. Now that Portland is not so affordable anymore everyone's looking for the next Portland, which most (at least the media/travel sites) are suggesting it's either Austin or Denver.
Newsflash both of those places are within 5 years of being at where Portland is now from a COL standpoint.
Edit: My personal preference, weather wise, is the PacNW. Place wise it's a Portland that no longer exists so...I guess neither one?
