I think people have more fun in Chicago and less serious, but it isn't passive like people are saying, people can be somewhat in your face in Chicago also, and I wouldn't exactly call it "midwest nice" or cheery. People in Chicago I've noticed put back the booze more so than other cities I've seen.

You can say that about anywhere, but you can also define a more general vibe and character. If there were no general opinions on a place, what would be the point of almost any thread. It would be robotic and #'s only...So yes, there is definitely a 'general' vibe in Chicago. Manhattan has a vibe, SF has a Vibe, New Orleans has a vibe, Denver has a vibe, Miami has a vibe... I notice the differences a lot and one of my favorite past times is to people watch and talk to strangers so...yep, that's my thoughts. I could go down to describing neighborhood to neighborhood vibes in Chicago, but there is also an overarching more encompassing vibe which is fairly dominant. It's the culture, the heart and soul of a place. Chicago has a clearly obvious vibe to me which is uniquely Chicago and it is VERY noticeable esp among people who were born there and your older life timers.

not disagreeing. but there IS also a wide variety of people in each place, and each places has its niches. I fell in love w Chicago BECAUSE of its vibe...so I'm totally agreeing with you..just thought id also point out that places also have variety and people on this website tend to OVERgeneralize

If you mean blustery as in loud and arrogant at times, then yes.

I thought he was making a bad "wind" joke. Not that there's anything wrong with that... (in my best Seinfeld impression)

It's not a tell it like it is place...I lived there and still do business there...it's definitely not midwest nice although it likes to play up its midwest friendliness and its values (yet it is probably the most corrupt city in the U.S.)...it's not a "passive" place at all. This place put people like Daley, Blago, George Ryan and dozens of corrput alderman and judges in office; yet somehow a certain national office holding politician came out of Chicago with clean hands.
