In terms of sand, water as well as in town amenities and activities, what do you think are some of the best beaches in the Northeast?

Island Beach State Park (NJ)-If you're looking for an untouched, undeveloped serene beach.

I really liked Long Beach (NY) as well, it seemed like a really nice town, very walkable, had a rail line, lots of restaurants and activities.

Yes!

I grew up going to Sea Isle City (NJ) so am biased toward it but some other notable ones are Rehobeth (DE), Cape May (NJ), Cape Cod National Seashore and Montauk (NY).

I love Misquamicut Rhde Island. In New England north of the cape and south of the cape make a difference in water temperature Labrador Current vs Gulf Stream. Falmouth, Hyannis and Dennis also have good beaches. Hampton NH is great maybe a little white trashy, but the strip is fun just won't go in the water.

some of the best north of MD, are the ones JUST north of MD -- DE Seashore State Park, Dewey, Rehoboth and Lewes and Cape Henlopen. Cape May, NJ and many of the south Jersey beaches are also good.

York and Old Orchard Beach in Maine are Fantastic.
I also like Nantasket in Massachusetts.

My faves in New England: Matunuck, Charlsetown and Goosewing beaches in RI (and Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island), Horseneck and Coast Guard beaches in MA. All are warm water beaches, but Coast Guard beach takes a little longer to get warm. I also love Singing Beach in Manchester By The Sea, MA ... the water is usually chilly but the beach is gorgeous

Easy answer: Hamptons and Montauk. Only beaches north of Maryland that regularly make "world's best beaches" list.

Also, why "north of Maryland"? There are no good beaches in Maryland, or Virginia. Really only North Carolina has good beaches in the Outer Banks, then the beaches pretty much suck until around Savannah. Places like Charleston or Myrtle Beach have cloudy water, dark brown sand, and little surf.

Really the only places outside of Florida that have great beaches, with sugar sand, awesome surf, and great atmosphere, would be NC's Outer Banks, and the East End of Long Island (Hamptons/Montauk). Not surprisingly those are the two most desirable beach locations north of Florida.
