I don't have the time to search all of the suburbs, but I looked at a few of them and St. Louis has a decent number.

Greater St. Louis: 174
St. Louis, MO - 154
East St. Louis, IL - 4 (the website lists one of them as being from East St. Louis, MO. There's no such place)
Alton, IL - 4
Belleville, IL - 3
Ferguson, MO - 2
Webster Groves, MO - 1
Columbia, IL - 1
O'Fallon, IL - 1
St. Peters, MO - 1
Grafton, IL - 1
Highland, IL - 1
Edwardsville, IL - 1

Outside of St. Louis proper, a lot of athletes are coming from the Illinois side and few are coming from St. Louis or St. Charles Counties. My only guess is that this may stem from many cities and towns in Illinois having been satellite cities and small towns even when St. Louis was at its peak, whereas the major shift to St. Louis County occurred after white flight and St. Charles County even later.

Yes. USC and UCLA are Olympian factories. These schools produce them like crazy.

What about the small town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado? I've heard they have produced quite a few! Of course mostly for the Winter Olympics I'm sure!

I'll find and post the 'where they come from' study done during the last Olympics when not on my phone but Cal & Stanford have led the way for quite some time now (I believe it goes Stanford, USC, Cal, UofFL, UCLA). Keep in mind that Stanford (and Cal also) historically dominates swimming, track & field, volleyball etc which are large contingents at the Olympics.

For the 2012 Summer Olympics in London:
Quote:
The United States has sent more than 500 Olympians to London. Ranging from 15 to 54 years of age, they'll compete in almost every Olympic sport.

We all know that their red, white, and blue uniforms come from China, but where do the athletes themselves hail from?

With the help of my former MPI colleague Patrick Adler, now a doctoral student at UCLA, I took a look. Adler was able to track down the hometowns for 467 of America’s Olympians and the places they currently live for 445. As usual, Zara Matheson mapped the data.

The map above shows the "hometown" metros where the Olympians grew up. The largest number – 9 percent (43 athletes) – are from Los Angeles; 3.6 percent (17) are from the Bay Area, 3 percent (14) are from greater New York; and 2.3 percent (11) from Dallas. Four metros claim ten athletes each (2 percent): Tampa, San Diego, Atlanta and Miami.

Smaller metros rise to the top when we control for population. Now, Rochester, New York, leads the way with 1.7 athletes per 100,000 people followed by Great Falls (1.2), Cheyenne (1.1), Fairbanks (1.0), and Boulder (1.0).

Do one for Baltimore, please. I know we have the athlete with the most gold metals in Michael Phelps.
