Of that list, I would pick either Memphis or St Louis, but you should have included Gary, IN, that would have been my pick

There are so many to choose from - many of them not on this list. Plus, most American cities are just as safe as anywhere else in the majority of the city.

This is not a definitive list and not in any particular order. The cities listed, especially the larger ones like Chicago or Philadelphia, certainly have perfectly safe neighborhoods. However, just on brief research I would expect these cities to be listed for their respective categories.

Largest Cities (pop. 1 million+):
Chicago
Philadelphia

Large Cities (population 500k+):
Detroit
Baltimore
Memphis

Mid-sized cities (Population 200k-500k)

St. Louis
New Orleans
Newark
Oakland
Cleveland
Miami
Toledo

Small cities (Population less than 200k)
Hartford, CT
Bridgeport, CT
Camden, NJ
Trenton, NJ
East Cleveland, OH
Riviera Beach, FL
Gary, IN
Pine Bluff, AR
Flint, MI
Compton, CA
Inglewood, CA
Richmond, CA
Atlantic City, NJ
Highland Park MI
Pompano Beach, FL
East St. Louis, IL

It's so weird to see Miami Cleveland or St. Louis listed in the same category with Toledo.

East St. Louis is in Illinois, not Missouri.

Good catch! I actually knew that but apparently was sloppy when writing that post.
