Hey OP! Curious if you ended up moving? We are considering the same move (Portland to Dallas) for many of the same reasons you stated. What ended up happening?
My wife is from the South and we are thinking of relocating due to a job transfer at her company. We currently live in Portland Oregon, and while we enjoy the natural beauty and mild climate, I have not had much success career wise. This is not based on my skills or experience (I have worked for fortune 500 companies plus hold degrees in computer science and business). It’s just that I kept getting edged out by PNW natives and probably discrimination being from California. It’s also a young city; companies may be preferring networked 21 year old college Millennials, vs someone in their 30s and already established career wise. With everyone moving to Portland, the job market is also incredibly fierce and there is a lack of openings. I hear DFW is generally older (late 20s to mid-30s) and more family friendly which is nice too (in Portland we haven’t made any real friends outside of our Church network). How is the Economy in the Dallas Fort Worth Plano area right now? I will attempt to secure work before the move, but would have no problem rolling the dice and moving without a job lined up. I will have no problems quitting my pathetic low paying part time job I hold in Portland.
Wonder if the OP ever pulled the trigger. The economy in DFW is great, but DFW is a gigantic downgrade in terms of climate, natural beauty, and outdoorsiness.

Climate could be an upgrade if you dislike cold, dreary, rainy climates.
OP did move to DFW. We still have a home on the west coast. Yes I desperately miss the nature and culture of the PNW, but we are doing much better financially (which trumps that). If we don’t stay here long term, we will be moving either back to the West Coast with stronger economic centers (Seattle, SF Bay or LA) or possibly closer to some family we have in NC.

It's true you won't remotely find the scenery or nature of the PNW or West Coast in DFW, but if you look, you can find people who do take advantage of what's here (outdoors-wise). There is a lot of culture in DFW, but it's a matter of knowing where to look. Where did you end up moving to in DFW?
