I have seen many threads that compare the appalachian mountains with those back west particularly the rockies, cascades, and or sierras. However most people seem to forget that there is another mountain range, or group of mountain ranges that are directly on the coast, they are not nearly as tall as the other mountain ranges but are still very dramatic and I think they would make a better comparison with the appalachian mountains since they are of similar height and are for the most part completely covered in trees. Since many people may not be familiar with the coast ranges, or might confuse them with the ones in British Columbia I will give a list of the ones I am referring to.

Pacific Coast Ranges in US going from north to south https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Coast_Ranges

Olympic Mountains (7,962 ft): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Mountains

Willapa Hills (3,114 ft): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willapa_Hills

Oregon Range (4,101 ft): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Coast_Range

Klamath Mountains (9,025 ft): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klamath_Mountains

California Coast Ranges (8,098 ft): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Coast_Ranges

* didn't include the the mountains in southern CA because they are not as green and are much taller.

Appalachian Mountains (6,684 ft) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_Mountains

So which mountain system do you like more, the coastal mountains of the west coast, or the Appalachian mountains of the east? Use whichever criteria you think is relevant, and feel free to post more pictures, I know that I underrepresented the Appalachians so if you know more about it, you can break it up into smaller subsections as I did with the coastal mountains.

Pacific Coast but it was hard because I love both. But the height won it for me.

As someone born and raised on the east coast now residing on the west coast. West coast mountains > east coast IMO. They are bigger and more majestic looking. East coast mountains are older and more worn down.

I love both ranges. I've spent more time in the various ranges of the Appalachian's (Smokies, Shenandoah, Blue Ridge, Adirondacks), but i prefer the coastal ranges in the west - more specifically the coastal range in oregon.

Both mountain ranges are absolutely stunning and beautiful, though.

Appalachian Mountains

I've done a lot of hiking in the Green Mountains of Vermont,
The White Mountains of New Hampshire, and have driven through the Smoky's
down in TN-NC, also Blue Ridge Parkway in VA.

Really good hiking mountains, not too rugged, just high enough.

I love the 'majesty' of the west coast mountains, the Rockies, etc. as much as I love the Pacific Coast Hwy.

They are majestic; while the Appalachian Mtns. are more gentle and rolling in layers -- from the views in my neighborhood, and just driving along the country roads and through the forests with a John Denver CD playing.

Much as I love the Appalachians, and love posting pictures of them, I have to give it to the west coast.
